Chapter 8: Life in the Spirit

Intro

Chapter 7 was a deep dive into the struggle between our two natures. We saw that while the law is good, it lacks the power to change our hearts. It only highlights our devastating condition and our need for rescue. We ended Chapter 7 with the hopeful realization that our deliverance doesn’t come from a rulebook, but from a person: Jesus Christ.

Chapter 8 is widely considered the mountain peak of the book of Romans. It begins with the life-changing declaration that there is "no condemnation" for those in Christ and ends with the promise that nothing can separate us from His love. As you study, look for the role of the Holy Spirit, who helps us in our weakness and confirms that we are God’s cherished children. This week is meant to settle your heart in the absolute security and victory we have as co-heirs with Christ.

Study Questions

1. Paul declares there is "no condemnation" for those in Christ Jesus. Why can he make such a definitive statement?
2. Read verses 5-6. What is your mind currently set on? Are you experiencing life and peace, or death?
3. According to verse 9, what is the condition for living "in the Spirit"?
4. Using verses 10-11, list the promises we have because we have the Holy Spirit.
5. Look up the Aramaic word Abba (verse 15). Why do you think Paul included this word, and what was he trying to emphasize?
6. Read verses 18-30 and summarize them in your own words in 2-3 sentences.
7. What is the difference between feeling guilty or shameful and being condemned? How does Jesus address these?
8. Verse 31 says, "If God is for us, who can be against us?" What does this mean, and what does it not mean?

In Chapter 8, Paul declares that there is now “no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.” We are adopted as children and have become co-heirs with Jesus. With this new identity, we can be certain that nothing in all of creation can separate us from God’s love.

Discussion Questions

1. "No condemnation" is a legal status, not a feeling. How can you preach that truth to yourself when you feel guilty?
2. This chapter declares we are "heirs" with Christ. What are we inheriting, and how does this change the way we live every day?
3. Where do you see "creation groaning" in the world today, and how does Chapter 8 offer hope for that pain?
4. Does "all things work for good" mean we will always have a happy ending in this life?
5. Reflect on your study this week. Are there any specific questions you want to discuss or insights you would like to share?
