Session 16

Chapter 16: Partners in the Gospel

From Romans Study

Watch Video

The One Thing: Everyone has a unique and vital part to play in the spread of the gospel.

Intro

In Chapter 15, we saw the global scope of Paul’s mission and his deep desire to see the gospel reach as far out into the world as possible. We saw his heart for the Church to live in harmony so that they would glorify God with one, unified voice. We ended with a prayer for the God of hope to fill us with all joy and peace in believing.

Now we reach the final chapter of Paul’s letter. At first glance, Chapter 16 might look like a simple list of names, but it is actually a powerful testament to the ordinary people who made the mission possible. Paul highlights men and women, Jews and Gentiles, and even slaves who were "partners in the gospel." As you read these final verses, look for the sense of community and the purpose within the Church. This is the time to begin reflecting on the one big takeaway you will carry with you from this 16-week journey through Romans.

Study Questions

  1. Paul singles out Phoebe as the one entrusted to deliver this letter. How does he tell the church to receive her?
  2. Make a list of every person mentioned in Romans 16. What does Paul say about each of them?
  3. Read verses 3-4. Paul mentions Priscilla and Aquila "risked their necks" for his life. What does this tell you about the depth of community and sacrifice in the early Church?
  4. Read Mark 12:21 and Romans 16:13. Just like the book of Romans, the Gospel of Mark was written to a Roman audience. What connections do you see between these two passages?
  5. According to verses 17-19, what are some things we should watch out for?
  6. Read Genesis 3:14-15 and Romans 16:20. What connection do you see? What is the surprising twist Paul adds to this ancient promise?
  7. Read the final doxology in verses 25-27. According to Paul, what is the source of our strength, and why does he give all the glory to "the only wise God"?
  8. How and to whom has the mystery of the gospel been revealed?
  9. What is your one big takeaway from the book of Romans?

In our closing video, we look to all the ordinary people Paul names in the final chapter of Romans. Just as they were then, we are all partners in the gospel. We each have a vital role to play in the mission of seeing everyone everywhere have an everyday relationship with Jesus.

Discussion Questions

  1. How does it feel to know that God recorded the names of ordinary people in the Bible forever?
  2. Look again at Genesis 3:14-15 and Romans 16:20. What is the surprising twist Paul adds to the promise of crushing Satan’s head?
  3. Are there any next steps God is calling you to take to grow in your relationship with Jesus and His Church?
  4. What is the one big step or action you are taking as a result of this 16-week journey through Romans?
  5. Reflect on your study this week. Are there any specific questions you want to discuss or insights you would like to share?
