Chapter 10: The Message of Salvation

The One Thing: The gospel is inclusive to all who call on Jesus, yet exclusive in that He is the only way to the Father.
Intro
In Chapter 9, we explored the mystery of God’s sovereignty and His divine right to direct the story of salvation. We saw that being part of God’s family isn’t about physical lineage, but about His mercy and choice. It was a heavy chapter that required us to trust the "Potter" even when we, the "clay," have questions about the design.
As we continue into Chapter 10, we find something interesting. While God is sovereign in His plan for salvation, He has also given us the responsibility to believe and to proclaim. The gospel is available to everyone who calls on the name of the Lord. This week, Paul calls us to action, reminding us that we have a responsibility in sharing the message of Jesus with the world.
Study Questions
- Read verses 1-3. Paul mentions that his people have a "zeal for God, but not according to knowledge." Have you ever seen someone try to get to God through intense effort but without the truth of the gospel?
- What is the purpose of preaching and evangelism in God’s plan?
- How would you describe Paul’s understanding of righteousness?
- Read Isaiah 52. What does Paul mean when he says, "How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news”?
- What is Paul’s strategy to unify the Jews and Gentiles in the church?
- Based on this chapter, how is the gospel both inclusive and exclusive?
- Why is this message of inclusivity and exclusivity so important for us today?
- Look at verses 9-10. Why do you think Paul links "confessing with your mouth" and "believing in your heart" together? Why are both necessary?
- What does verse 17 mean when it says that "faith comes from hearing"?
The gospel is inclusive in that it is for everyone. But it is also exclusive because it is only through Jesus. In this video, we explore the responsibility we have to carry the message of the gospel to the world.
